Joeism back online with Slicehost

About a year ago I mentioned that the Joeism blog was back on the original bronto server. Well that marriage ended a couple weeks ago when the hard drive in the server died after eight years of successful spinning.

All is well though. Through the magic of the Internet and my credit card, Joeism is back online through Slicehost — a hosted website provider that is a step above most of the stuff out there. Slicehost is geared more for developers so I had to brush off some rusty Linux and MySQL admin skills to get it going. Still got it and so far so good.

I will now resume my previous schedule of posting an entry every couple months. Stay tuned!

I thought Aamer won the original Bronto server in a foot race?!

That server wouldn’t go that easily … plus Aamer won a foot race? Both would be unprecedented events. I think that I might have given away a USB hub.

Perhaps we should have a rematch. Aamer??

Haha, I was deceptively fast … like lightening, I tell you. But don’t ask me to run again; as Seinfeld said “I choose not to run.”

Actually, that server is still running strong. It has been hosting my email and has served as a RAID-ed backup for my files for the last 5 years. It’s still in my parents’ basement in Philadelphia and until a couple of weeks ago (when I migrated everything to GMail), it was still holding all of my email. During the course of this time, it has ran all kinds of operating systems including Windows Server, CentOS, Debian, and Ubuntu. I even have it connected to a UPS to ensure continuity.

By the way, Joe, I have an account with Slicehost that we use for our business too. So far, it’s been a really good experience.

That’s funny. I gotta think that Aamer’s server is stega, ptero, or rex versus the first bronto server but maybe I’m wrong.

Slicehost is good so far. I was bummed about it this morning because it was insanely slow. I eventually figured out that it was swapping memory like crazy because of Apache. I changed some Apache settings (min servers, etc.) and I was good to go. Still amazed that I can still muddle through that type of stuff … all with my kids running wild through the house.

Yeah, it was ptero :-)

I happen to have a somewhat old document (or perhaps a tablet?) with some of Joeism’s original creeds spelled out.

To your relief (and your fellow Bronto folks’ dismay) I am not sure where it is at the moment.

Todd … Would love to see that if you stumble upon it again.

I should have etched them on tablets. Reminds of this movie scene:
